Envy

On today’s podcast we’re discussing the sin of envy, which refers to feeling resentful about what someone else has, and the desire for another person’s possessions or fortunes.

Envy robs our peace and joy because when we get fixated on what we don’t have, we can’t enjoy the blessings we do have.

We’ll learn that:

 – We can combat envy by practicing humility and gratitude

 – God will provide everything we need

 – Charity toward others wards off envy

Spiritual Maturity

People keep asking about the problems in the world today: What is the cause? Why is this happening? What can we do? What we instead need to focus on doing is being the husbands, fathers, and friends we need to be so we can obtain virtue and become saints.

We can’t get caught up in the world except to pray for it; because getting caught up in it all will just depress us and cause us to take our eyes off of God. The real issue here isn’t the state of the world, it’s our own lack of spiritual maturity.

In this episode we talk about:
– What it means to be spiritually mature
– How being spiritually mature gives you freedom
– How to identify what is of God and what is not
– The only way we actually can change the world

We are called to be Christ’s light in the world, and that starts by doing our best to reach spiritual maturity.

Resolutions

Each year we resolve to make ourselves better men as we search for earthly happiness. Yet, as many of us know, the issue isn’t setting new goals, it’s sticking to them because it’s hard to want to change our habits for no reason. If our goals don’t have a worthy ‘why’, we are much less likely to follow through with them. In today’s podcast, we talk about the one resolution that matters most and how relating all other resolutions to this one will help keep us on track.

In this podcast, we learn that:

 – We need to create actionable steps with our resolutions

 – You need to know your ‘why’ when setting goals

 – We can ask Jesus to help us stick to our goals

Pete Burak

In today’s episode of “Just a Guy in the Pew,” we welcome the remarkable Pete Burak, director of Renewal Ministries’ young adult outreach, i.d.9:16.

Pete believes that we are all called to be disciples of Christ. In its truest meaning, a disciple is a student, a learner, and a follower. Each of us has unique gifts and life stories we can share to draw others closer to God.

In this podcast, we learn that:

 – Strong communities and relationships sustain and develop disciples

 – The Scriptures show how Jesus taught the Apostles to preach

 – The Holy Spirit guides us on our walk as disciples

 – We are merely participants, not protagonists, in the conversion of others.

Perfectionsim

In today’s podcast, we’re discussing the dangers of trying to be perfect. Many men tell me they set lofty goals to ditch bad habits or to become better Catholics and when they stumble, they grow disappointed and give up.

But God does not expect us to be perfect. He is happy with even small steps we make in our desire to be better men. The point is to keep showing up because often the “cracks” in our lives are where we find a more meaningful relationship with God.

In this podcast, we learn that:

– Striving to be perfect leads to disappointment and even depression

– God is happy with the small steps we make to be better

– Finding the right tools and relationships helps us make progress.

Dr. Bob Schuchts

In today’s special bonus episode of “Just a Guy in the Pew,” we welcome the founder of the John Paul II Healing Center, Dr. Bob Schuchts. Dr. Bob says that men often push problems down to avoid dealing with struggles like marital conflicts and addictions. He explains how healing begins when we come to grips with our problems, ask Jesus for help, and open our hearts to His healing graces.

In this episode we discuss how:

– We don’t have to hit rock bottom to change, we need to build self-awareness

– Behind every disordered desire there is a holy desire

– With help from the Holy Spirit and supportive connections, we can be healed

– Dr. Bob’s prayer for healing will start us on the path to peace.
